about my work
All carvings are from my own patterns. The only power tools I use are a band saw to cut out the shape & a drill press for the eye holes, dowel rod holes & forstner bits to begin the hollowing process.
Wooden decoys are made mostly from very old pattern grade sugar pine, northern white pine & occasional cedar & balsa. Some are driftwood, found wood, and wood from ancient barns. Cork decoys are carved from both white & black cork.
The carving is a long, drawn-out affair. Using draw knives, carving knives, wood chisels & gouges, rasps, Italian rifflers & sand paper. Many of my hand tools are antique & irreplaceable.
The best glues, marine grade sealers, & only oil paints are used on all of my work, no matter if it rides the water or the shelf.
I never rush, & I can't "bang 'em out" - it's not my style. Each work is a passionate endeavor. I visualize works in the materials I use. That's how it all begins...
Enjoyment is the name of the game.
